The Sharp End Athletic Demo

On January 8, 2011 the ATX Flatland Crew were invited to the “Sharp End Athletics” grand opening to do a flatland demonstration of flatland stunts. This was the very first event for us in 2011 and everyone was excited to ride. It was being hosted by friends of the crew Ben and Ashlee. They provided food beverages, DJ and a small flat area for us to ride in. Our riding spot was a cleared out section of a warehouse. It was filled with dust so the spot was very slick. We gave it a good mopping and that helped out a bit but it was still kind of slick. We all look at it as if we were at JoMoPro getting ready to ride for competition.

The event ran very smoothly and there many people amazed at the tricks that were being seen. I met some one he was really impressed with the display of tricks. I went to promote BMX Freestyler and tell him that he could find more information about the flatland there. He told me he had already been to BMX Freestyler because he saw that the ATX Crew was coming to the event. I thought that was ultra cool.

The Crew took a couple of breaks to see some of the other activities that were going on. There was a training area that was filled with equipment. There was 1 piece of equipment that got everyone attention. It was a strap that was pulled very tight. It was designed to build balance and work out your core strength area. There were 2 versions a short one that was very fun to stand on and see how balance you were. The longer one really tested your core strength. It was fun to watch everyone trying to make progress with this strap.

Surprised guest Michael Shao from Collage Station, TX showed up to participate in the demo. We had not seen Michael in a while and he had 1 heck of a growth spurt. Along with growing in size, he also had a new Colony Cube. It was a great fit for him and everyone’s jaws dropped when he found the sweet spot to spin very fast. He was whipping around Mc Circles at and incredible speed and switching into spinning half hikers and back. Jim was recording at the time he hit that link so we will have to be on the look out for this one.

Michael will be turning 16 on Monday the 10th of January. This trip to Austin was in celebration of this birthday from his parents. He will be getting his license and driving very soon. We will be seeing more of Michael this year as he becomes more mobile and able to get around.

There was a dunking booth as well. People took turns trying to dunk Ben in the pool of water. It was very entertaining as everyone was shouting and yelling trying their best to hit the target. Ben was a great sport as he took a few dips in the water because he got dunked!

The evening ended around 8:30 and things were winding down. A few of us went to the O.G. to finish off a great evening of fun and activates. Thanks to everyone that came out to make this grand opening a very fun event. Big shout out to Ben and Ashlee for wanting to have the ATX Flatland Crew at the grand opening. The Panama Flat International wrap up with DiEgo Tejada

The Panama Flat International is one of the biggest Flatland BMX contest in Latin America, based in Panama City, Panama. The Event took place Nov. 14, 2010; riders from Central/South and North America attended to make it once again unforgettable including a special appearance by Pete Brandt who judge the contest and who also through down a sick show for the crowd. I had never been to Central America ever since I left for a better opportunity here in the United States so visiting Panama for me was like visiting home again. The land structure is definitely different and an experience many people should consider seeing especially if you come from a state like Texas where everything is flat.

DiEgo Tejada  , Peakyp Msheffield

Riders from South America were Colombians finest: Jonathan Camargo (Star Bikes) with his unique technical style and flow, throwing down some of the most original combos, like a full 360 body boomerang to oppy feet steam to include in his combos made him stand out. His fellow rider Giovanny Francisco Fonque and Javier Roldan also represented from Colombia with much talent to scare most of the riders competing.

Riders from Costa Rica brought their A-game as well representing high energy level of style, props to the riders from Costa Rica including Tico's Jam Organizer: Mike Meza who was also one of the main Judges during the contest.
Giovanny Francisco Fonque, DiEgo Tejada, Jonathan Camargo, Javier Roldan, Jorge Vasquez, Mike Meza

Chitré is a city in Panama in which I consider it being a safe haven for flatlanders. So many young talented kids with a bright future in the sport came from there. The feeling I got from them was unforgettable because they rode not just to compete but because they have fun riding. In all Panama has amazing talent in the sport. Riders who stood out were 1st place Jorge Vasquez who competed at Jomo Pro taking 2nd place keep an eye out for him next year and also Eric Camaño who got 3rd place, Eric has infinite style and flow and seems like a good kid, very disciplined. Too many style and talent to name them all but yeah also keep an eye out for Gilberto Enrique Ibarra as well, very unique talent.

Canada's finest: Percy Marshall! This dude is practically on another level! Amazing talent! Percy took Best Trick and Got 2nd place! How bout that?! I had a great time hanging out with Percy, even though he could barely speak any Spanish with the locals he picked up quite a few new words with the help of my translation lol.
DiEgo Tejada, Jorge Vasquez, Jonathan Camargo, Peakyp Msheffield

I would like to thank the Organizers: Edgardo Flores, Hugo Quiroz and Fernando Garrido, who were very nice to me and to all of the riders who attend the Panama Flat Int. They made sure we had an experience of a lifetime and who have a passion for the Sport of Flatland BMX. Thank You!

Pirate Jam - 2006

The Pirate Jam was presented by London Bikes and ForgetYouNotFilms, Inc.. It was located in Fort
worth, Texas on December 2, 2006. The M.C. for this event was none other than Chris Balles,
event organizer for the Texas Flatland Round Up Series. When we arrived at the location we
were greeted with warm smiles from friends from Louisiana. We knew that with the Southriders in Town we were going to have a great time. Tex did an extraordinary job putting together this event for everyone to enjoy. The surface was Masonite wood across the entire 4000 Sq. Ft. Basketball court in the R.D. Evans Community Center. It didn't buckle up and was smooth all the way around. Oranges were
provided for all the riders and there were a lot of oranges to be eaten. The competition was broken into four classes. Novice, Expert, Master and Pro. It was a jam format but there was no break down in 2nd 3rd
4th, ect. It was winner take all. The way you won was to preform the best trick during your run.
The Judges didn't keep track of points but they had to all agree on what trick was the best.
The day ended up with 4 different winners

Novice Class: Randall Willis
Expert Class: Kenny Boucher
Master Class: Alex Warden
Pro Class: Jesse Puente
I want to thank everyone that was involved with the tearing down of this event. There was a lot
of prep work to get the floor installed but the tear down was a volunteer process. I was one of
the riders to stay behind with many others to help load everything back into the truck.

Julio Cotto says: "The Pirate jam was superb…excellent concept and poof that flatland is alive an well in the United States"

Art Thomason say: "The Pirate Jam was a cool event because it didn't have the pressure of a contest, but it was more organized than a jam, so everyone from the AMs to the pros got to show what they can do and have fun.....AAAARRRGGG"

Jesse Puente says :"It was a well put together contest. The riders were on a higher level. They came from all around the US to compete. It's the beginning of something big for flatland. The ground was perfect and the vibe was flatland. Also, there was no smoking in the house which is positive. Tex's video premier was amazing as he put flatland center stage. It was a lot of fun, there were no complaints. Next year it will be huge."

Jim McKay says "The Pirate Jam was really special. It was well executed, a ton of fun, and really original.
Throwing down banger tricks in a jam format for the booty of actual silver was pretty memorable.

McDuff Jam 2010 - Wrap Up

McDuff Jam 2010 Highlight Video

On May 29, 2010 the very first McDuff jam was held in Austin, Texas. We had the honor to have the one and only Shintaro Misawa from Tokyo, Japan join the event. Many spectators and riders from all over Texas and surrounding states came to participate in the days events. There were memories that were generated that will last a life time.
Team McDuff is a joint effort between founders Jim Mckay and Josh Duffek. They were sitting around talking one night about how cool it would be to have Shintaro show up to Austin, Texas. So they offered to pay his air fair but Shintaro had already really wanted to come to Texas and just happen to have some money stashed away for a ticket. The next thing I knew I was getting messages from Jim and Josh saying that Shintaro is flying to Austin, Texas for the MC Duff Jam.
Shintaro’s flight came in on Wednesday night and he had a big welcome by Team McDuff. He stayed at the McDuff house and rode for 4 days with the ATX Flatland Crew. The official day for the jam was on Saturday but every day was taken advantage of to ride together. On the very first night Shintaro caused a burning ember with his pegs. It was a very cool thing to see. I for one have never seen that happen before.

The day of the McDuff Jam there were around 40 riders/spectators through out the day. We even had Red Bull provided for the event. Special thanks to Keith Peterson for making that happen. Team Mc Duff and Tod Miller provided BBQ food for the day and it was cooked up by Ruben Castillo, Tod Miller, Jim Mckay, Josh Duffek and David Larocca. Photos are provided by Kelly and Monique Baldwin.
The DVD version of the MC Duff Jam 2010 will be made available soon.

The 1st Annual BMX Round Up

On April 29, 2010 the 1st Annual BMX Round Up was held in Austin, Texas in Zilker Park. The event was put together by members of the BMX Museum site. One of the leaders that spear headed the event, Angel did a fantastic job of communicating information to everyone so this event could take place. When I first heard about the event I was all for it and I started to follow the thread. I met many great guys and gals from all over Texas. I even met a few BMX Freesytler visitors I had not met before. I have definitely perfected the art of filming and photography of a event. This event started at 10:00 a.m. and video and photos are posted by 6:15 p.m. WOW! Thanks to everyone that showed up and participated to make this 1st event so much fun.

Check out these sites for some super cools stuff.

Take Flight Flatland Jam

 Interview with David Weathersby
9/9/2004

Name:  David Weathersby

Age: Born on 11/22/83, I'm 20 years old.

What do you do for a living? Right now I attend college and ride flatland. I'm living at home with my mother and brother, they are like the best roommates ever, so I just chill.

How long have you been riding flatland?  I started right after I turned 14, the beginning
of 97. So that makes it about 7 years.

What got you started riding?  I saw Martti on the X-Games on his slammer, she was doing some crazy moves. After seeing some more flatland I knew I wanted to ride flatland and that was it. So I bought a Haro Cozmo 98 and met some locals after a few months. They got me pretty interested so I got a GT Show and started to really do flatland and compete. I just wanted to do the things that I once thought impossible, and I hated team sports.

Who are some of your favorite riders?  First of all I gotta Ruben C., he's a great friend and influence. Also my dog EZ for keeping it real with us Texans. Also, Martti, Jumilin, Desroche, Collins, Stiengrabber, this list could be super long. O yeah and Lee M.

What is your most difficult  combination?  Well, right now I'm spinning cliffhangers and just not landing the damn things so that's gotta be my most difficult trick. But my hardest combo is steam to hitch to steam to crackpack to one handed steam to forkspin to tomahawk with a inverted hand barflip to inside circle K, one kick and stick it. I hope you can understand that.

Where is the next level for flatland?  The next level is in anyone that gets on that bike and does something they couldn't before. The level is always changing for everyone and I think flatland is going to be appreciated for it's unique qualities. I think the more it gets out to people the more they will empathize with us. And maybe it will branch out into a different type of clique, ya know. Hopefully flatland will be more of a respected sport. Also I think some companies are going to put some real change in our pockets if we keep it mind blowing.

How did feel to win first place?  The feeling was great, I was so stoked after my 7th trick attempt and knew I'd won, everyone kept telling me I won so I was stoked. I was so happy to get paid and trade the plane tickets in for my friends' benefit. I'm going to rent  a van instead of flying without my crew. So all the gas and hotel is free, I feel really happy about helping my friends and finally just proving to myself I can do what I set out to do. I rode almost flawless and won, It felt great to see my city give me love.

Do you have plans to go pro?  I plan on entering as a pro as soon as I get someone to pay for the entry fee. Ha ha NO, I guess it'll be time for me to enter that level in less than a year. I think I can stay up on my game and progress to the professional level. As soon as I get some more help like this. :)

Any last comments?  Yeah, I'd like to thank Red Bull and Empire BMX for sponsoring the comp and making it all happen. Thank you to my Texans for sure, you know who you are, and I hope A-town will start having more contests. Thank you Mark and BMX Freestyler
