Name: Paul Schulwitz
AKA: RL Paulie
Age: 33
Years Riding: Hmm..probably 5
years total for freestyle.
What got you started?
Going back well into the 70's my friends and I always loved riding bikes. We put big knobby tires
on our hand me down bikes and went trail riding and tooled around the neighborhood.
Progression to BMX was a logical step. I started buying some BMX Action and BMX PLUS!
magazines around 1983. I then started buying parts from mail order companies and slowly built
up my Huffy with tuff wheels, Redline stem, Dia-Compe brakes and started attempting
framestands and curb endos, ext. in 1985.
What inspires you to ride?
You guys at vbmx are a major source of inspiration! I
also find that it is very good exercise. With two kids, the
only time I really get to exercise is at night. I hurt my
shoulder a couple months ago so I stopped wieght
training, I can't ride my mountain bike at night, so I'm
riding my 20" now under the lights of a parking lot. I'm
amazed at how winded I get during a flatland session.
How did you find out about Vintage BMX?
Almost a year ago an old riding buddy contacted me
and told me he bought an old Dyno like I used to have
at a police auction. He said he was going to start riding
it. I though he was nuts at the time, but the idea piqued
my interest, I started checking out ebay and saw a
couple RL-20II's fetching over a grand...I almost
immediately called my dad to see if the old Redline was
still hanging in the garage. Luckily it was. The next
time I visited I got it down and brought it to Virginia. I
initially palled to sell it. but then I found
vintagembx.com and was reintroduced to the sport of
flatland and introduced to the hobby of collecting. I
bought a bunch of parts for it, cleaned it up, started
riding it. The Redline is now semi-retired and I'm
thinking now about how I want to restore it...like I
rode it bitd? or with all Redline components, ect.
What is your Favorite Topic?
Mostly the current riding threads, but I
also love to see some sweet old school
builds and "diamonds in the rough" finds.
What was your first trick?
Hm. Hard to say. Curb endo maybe?
framstand?
What was your hardest trick?
That's also a though one. Defiantly  the trick most
appreciated by onlookers was a surfer. It wasn't
really that hard for me to learn though. I spent a lot
more time learning things like squeakers,
backwards infinity rolls...never really much more
difficult than that.
What is your best memory?
Too many good memories to list. We used to hang out a State Park in upstate NY and put on shows.
My one friend was really into it and put up posters and everything. We'd have a bit of a crowd. That
was fun.
What is your worst memory?
Getting jumped and having my aforementioned built
up Huffy stolen by about 15 punks.
What kind of bike do you ride now?
Collection:
1985 Dyno Compe
1986 Redline RL-20II
