What is your Name? Kelly Baldwin

How old are you? 31

Where do you live? Angleton, Texas

What do you do for a living? 3D Cad draftsman / Pipe Designer
What got you involved with Flatland BMX? I started out as a skater back in 1987-88,
but I had always been interested in freestyle after seeing the movie RAD. I had learned
how to do endos, and rock walks after seeing RAD, but started skating instead because I
didn’t know of anyone else who freestyled. I was out skating one day when three riders
showed up on my street and asked me what I could do. I busted out a few tricks for them
like kickflips and backside shove its and then they started busting out with jump ropes,
infinity rolls and decades. After that I basically just tossed my skate board in the garage,
and bought a black GT performer. I’ve been hooked ever since. (And by the way,
Cesar
Calderon was one of those three riders that showed up that day)
What inspired you to create Chainlinkz? Chainlinkz
was inspired by the awesome potential that I saw in the
Houston area for flatlanding. Starting Chainlinkz gave me
the opportunity to show off some of their talent.
What do you see in the Future for Chainlinkz and its
evolvement in the flatland community?
I would like to
see my
Global Linkz page expand. I would like to represent
underground riders from all around the world. You would
be able to click on different parts of the globe and learn
about other flat riders that are keeping it alive in their city
or country. Chainlinkz is also working on a video project,
but that’s going pretty slow at the moment.
What is your favorite combination to do? Right now I like to do any combination I can
think of that involves a Juggler.
What links are you currently working on now?  I’ve
been working really hard on mastering kickflip hikers, and
being able to roll in and out of crackpackers one handed.
What was your worst accident on a bike?  I would have
to say that my worst accident ever was from trying
backwards decades back in 1990. I made the jump over the
top and when I was coming back down my foot slipped on
the landing. I ended up falling backwards and hitting my
head so hard on the cement that I blacked out. No one was
around when it happened, so I have no idea of how long I
was out.
How often do you ride and with whom?  I average
about 8 to 10 hours a week of riding. I get to ride with most
of the flatlanders on my site. Mainly
Art Thomason, Cesar
Calderon, Charlie Hawkins, Lee Edwards, Jesse Edwards,
Jim Mckay and Josh Duffek.
What was the vibe at the Texas Flatland Round Up?
Any time you get to hang out with fellow riders there’s
always a good vibe. I felt like the Round Up was a success
thanks to Chris Balles, and I’m ready for next years.
Did you do all the tricks you wanted to pull during your run?
No. I had planned on linking in and out of jugglers and crackpackers
for one of my runs. I ended up only doing one juggler and I really
wasn’t that happy with it.
What will be the next comp you will ride in?  Texhoma Flatland
Contest, October 22, 2005, Texoma Cycling Center, 502 Wichita
Street, Wichita Falls, TX, 76306. You can email Chris R. at
flatmonkey@sbcglobal.net
What is your worst memory about flatlanding? What are you
talking about? How can you have any bad memories about flatland?
I must have fallen on my head to hard to remember any!
What kind of bike are you riding and how is it set up?  I’m riding
a Quamen Clad Generation 4 with Nankai Techno Lite Freecoaster
hub, Odyssey Hazard Lite rims, Odyssey Flatland Forks, Ares 88
Products Eight Bars, Brickhouse Stem, and no brakes
Who are some of the riders that you admire current and past?  At the moment I
would have to say Art Thomason. He is totally dedicated to flatland and it shows in his
riding. He has helped to motivate me in my style of riding. Kevin Jones was an early
influence for me. I use to go to Cesar’s house and we would watch Dorkin in York
videos and then go out and try what we saw.
Any last Comments?  If you’re not having any fun then you’re probably not really riding………

How To
Where you surprised to take home first place in expert?
I was really surprised to take home first place! I held back a
lot of my harder stuff because I was having a hard time riding
on the surface out there. I went for tricks that I was
comfortable with on that surface even though they were
probably not as hard as the ones Adam, Sean and Diego
were doing.
