Eddie was nice enough to visit with use on the VintageBMX Message
board. I saved the thread because I knew this was a very special night
that many never thought in there life time that it would ever happen. I
was there so I know it did. Here is your chance to sort of get the
feeling of what went on that night.

Eddie,

Thanks for everything you gave to the sport and to us. You sure made for some great
memories.

Question 1. What was your favorite bike you've ridden? Model and year?

Thanks!

Eddie, big thanks for doing this! It means a lot to a lot of us.

Anyway, were you ever allowed to ride in public without your uniform on(i.e. did you ever ride
at the pipeline in a T-Shirt and jeans). I just got the impression back then that you guys always
were in uniform any time you rode.

How strict was GT with making you "look the part"?

Big thanks again man!

Welcome Eddie! Great to have you here.
I just want to say that I saw you in the Summer of 87 when the GT tour came through
Rochester, NY. You guys put on a great show!
By random chance I actually met you and Martin at a club in Datona Beach FL during Spring
Break 1991. Me and the boys showed up at the Coliseum dance club and you and Martin
tossed VANS "Get a Grip!" t-shirts into the crowd. I ended up getting one but had to snatch it
away from somebody before he got a good grip on it... lol. I still have the shirt btw. I think I also
have yours and Martins autographs from that night as well. Thanks for the memories and keep
riding!

chris - let everyone know i went thru the replies to the interview - it was awesome to see how
many people are still into old school - my wife said my head won't fit thru the double garage
door - lol
seriously i feel like just a regular that got a chance to show some skills, ride, have fun and as
a bonus get paid and travel

T was pretty cool - they wanted the look for comps and appearances, but were pretty lenient
about practice attire. take it that all my stuff came from GT so it was almost guaranteed i'd
wear their logo.

Its totaly awesome that you took time out of your schedual to post a few messages for us. Did
you have any idea that there were so many guys out there that think about you and give you
the credit for reasons that they still ride today?

doppleganger - i think the tricks are incredible - something to be said about practicing in a
foam pit. when i think of how we learned tricks back in the day - trying to pull off the new ones
old school style - lots of pain involved in the learning - though Jose Yanez (?) went into
mattresses for the backflip for "RAD"

I really had no idea - I have had a few occasions like when in south africa on a movie set and
this guy was calling my name on the street - I thought it was for the movie - he actually
recognized me and came up to talk to me about freestyle - the other stunt guys were kind of
amazed at how international BMX was and that people outside of US knew me.

My son who is 8 wanted me to ask how you jump out of the pool and step off of the fence. He

For myself. Simply put I appreciate the time you are spending with us and thank you for all the

Eddie, how involved were you with designing things for GT( did they just ask advice here and
there or did they take note of all your ideas/designs, etc)?

Also, did you have a hand in designing the *new* Pro Performer frame and fork in '87 and how
did you like it compared to the original Pro Performer in your opinion?

eddie, im 17 years old and interested in learning old school freestyle tricks , i was wondering
how did you go about learning tricks? currently, i ride a black 1987 gt performer, could you
sign it for me someday? id just like to say that even though i wasnt around in the early 80s,
that your still my favorite freestyle rider, and that freestyle of the 80s was really cool.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by oldfreestyler (Member # 2400) on June 08, 2004 09:33 PM:

puddleduck - i have many fond memories - pipeline holds the majority of them - i must have hit
the ground more times doing stuntwork than riding - some memories are lost and gone forever
- "i've fallen and i can't find my bike"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by oldfreestyler (Member # 2400) on June 08, 2004 09:35 PM:

another question for eddie...in the beginning scene of "rad", it looked like u and martin were
talking while doing your tricks. were u??

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by doppelganger (Member # 2545) on June 08, 2004 09:36 PM:

Eddie - kind of personal question so you can skip it if you want.

What did some of the "stars" of freestyling earn as a salary in the peak of freestlying
popularity? The mags seemed to make it out like you guys were all multi millionaires and I
believed it when I was 15!!

I thought if I continued to wire tricks and move to California I was going to hit it big time!

Any ball park figures you could share? Thanks!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by oldfreestyler (Member # 2400) on June 08, 2004 09:36 PM:

matt - the reason for the original performer was to let the front brakes have space under the
frame - this was my design before the pots mod. I was not involved with the redesign in '87 -
and in comparison it was only slightly different when riding - the geometrics felt the same

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by oldfreestyler (Member # 2400) on June 08, 2004 09:39 PM:

for blue-max - keep your eye out for a how to called "freestylin' how to" it has the old 80's
tricks laid out. wizard publications

Posted by oldfreestyler (Member # 2400) on June 08, 2004 09:41 PM:

Posted by oldfreestyler (Member # 2400) on June 08, 2004 09:42 PM:

Posted by oldfreestyler (Member # 2400) on June 08, 2004 09:43 PM:

other! lol.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by oldfreestyler (Member # 2400) on June 08, 2004 09:44 PM:

I can only speak for myself on salary - just from GT it was around $3,000 per month not
including photo contingencies, contest takes, and other smaller sponsors - millionaires - no -
but getting paid to ride - i felt like a millionaire

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by d-saka (Member # 2925) on June 08, 2004 09:45 PM:

I caught your reply in your interview about the old school bmx stuff(made me laugh btw), but it

back memories?

truth or myth: every once in a while you used to show up and race bmx at locals, and while you
were way out front, throw in a 360* to wowe the crowd.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by oldfreestyler (Member # 2400) on June 08, 2004 09:58 PM:

Just a quick quote from notfreestylin.com that sums it up pretty well:

Though we are all riders just as he is, we are but mere princes, princess and knights in waiting

the early 80's torker race frame would have been the choice - it was one of my first rides

Eddie,

Thank you again for your time and if you should get that PO box let us know the address. I
have to run but I did want to let you know that my son is watching Rad and is excited as can be
that you replied to him. Thank you for that, this shows what we all have known for many years
you are and always have been a class act.

Congratulations to you and your wife on the new adventure of parenthood.

Awesome indeed!

Great seeing a legend swoop by for a little Q&A and we'll always have questions to ask.

Hopefully Eddie, Woody, Fred, etc... still check the site and maybe get inspired to comment
about one of our restorations, questions, add insight, etc....

Eddie, you're one of the fellas so just hang out, shoot the breeze and join the gang.

Yea, When Eddie wasn't able to log in I was worried that this was all for nothing. But in the end
it all worked out nicely. He and i chatted for a few after he finished on here and he was so
happy we did this for him. He had a great time. I know he'll be back from time to time. Jeff and I
are going to be working on a project with Eddie in the near future. Don't want to say too much,
but be assured that there will be more of "The King" in the future...Thanks again to everyone
who was on tonight, and letting Eddie know that he's not forgotten.
